Chapter 67 The Shadow of Gotham
Chapter 67 The Shadow of Gotham
Looking out the window, Li Wei saw Gordon's car approaching from a distance and stopping downstairs at the police station.
He picked up the coffee on his desk, took a sip, and the bitter taste stimulated his taste buds, instantly invigorating him.
He grabbed the keys and headed downstairs, eager to get the documents—the mayor's warrant for Maroney's arrest.
At the top of the stairs, Levi saw Gordon, but Gordon's gloomy face gave Levi a bad feeling.
"Hey buddy, did you bring the documents back?"
Levi glanced at the folder in Gordon's hand. "When do we issue the arrest warrant? You know, Maronny could escape at any moment."
"Li Wei, I'm so sorry."
Gordon looked apologetic. "Let's go back to the office. I'll tell you everything."
...
In the office, Li Wei slammed his coffee cup to the ground.
With a crisp crack, the coffee cup shattered into pieces, splattering pale brown coffee all over the floor.
"You mean, this bastard doesn't support us issuing arrest warrants and is even ordering us to stop arresting criminals?!"
Li Wei was furious. He knew Gotham was a corrupt place, but he never imagined it would be this corrupt.
The police's arrest of this guy who was a menace to the entire Gotham City turned out to be a mistake; it was the funniest joke Levi had ever heard.
"Calm down, buddy."
Gordon looked apologetic. "I understand how you feel. In fact, I'm angry too."
But this is a legal process, and there's nothing we can do about it.
Maroney claims he was mind-controlled by the Scarecrow, that all decisions were made by the Scarecrow, and that he knew nothing about it.
Gordon eventually ran out of things to say, saying that Gotham's justice system was a complete joke.
"Screw mind control! That bastard!"
Levi was furious. "Maroni must have bribed that bastard! That must be it!"
This guy disappears perfectly when citizens are threatened, and then takes bribes after the matter is over!
Isn't this guy afraid of getting hit by a car one day?! Or is he afraid of having a son who's born without an anus?!
Li Wei vented his anger loudly, utterly disappointed with Gotham's rulers, and he began to understand Batman somewhat.
The reason this guy hides in the shadows and chooses to punish evil and promote good through his own hands is probably because he has seen the corruption in Gotham.
If even Bruce Wayne, Gotham's richest man, couldn't do it, Levi didn't think he could.
"Dude, I got a little carried away, sorry."
After apologizing to Gordon, Levi placed his identification on the table. "I feel I'm not up to the job of an advisor. I'd better do something else in the future."
"Don't think like that, buddy. I know there are some things you'll find hard to accept right now."
Gordon picked up the identification and handed it back to Levi. "There are dark secrets everywhere in the world, but Gotham has more of them."
If we all choose to run away, the dark secrets of Gotham will only grow deeper.
"Take a break, buddy. I'll approve a month's leave for you. Get some proper rest."
Gordon's persuasion made Levi waver somewhat; he felt very fulfilled during his time at the police station.
"Maybe you're right, buddy. I might really need to take a break for a while."
Li Wei said, "Thanks, buddy. I might have been a little out of line, but it wasn't directed at you."
"I understand what you mean," Gordon said, extending his right hand to Levi. "I've been in the same situation as you, I remember it was when I first started working at the police station."
So many years have passed, and I still haven't been able to change any of this.
Hopefully, in your hands, you can bring a different look to the police station.
Looking at the right hand extended in front of him, Li Wei was also somewhat moved.
Gordon really can't be blamed for what happened today. In the entire Gotham City Police Department, there are very few people who don't have any vested interests with gangsters.
As for the big shots in Gotham City, there's a 99% chance they've all taken bribes.
"This world is too dark, but one day we will be able to change it."
Li Wei reached out and shook hands tightly with Gordon, everything was understood without words.
After saying goodbye to Gordon, Levi turned and left the office, leaving Gordon alone sitting at his desk in a daze.
When Li Wei went down to the second floor of the police station, he found a bustling scene with many people coming and going, creating a noisy atmosphere.
Li Wei's gaze quickly sharpened as he spotted a familiar face.
"Hey, isn't this Officer Li Wei?"
He Mang saw Li Wei, smiled at him provocatively, revealing a set of white teeth.
"Did the officer know I was leaving today, so he came all this way to see me off?"
He Mang's provocative words made Li Wei frown slightly. "Can anyone tell me what's going on?"
Li Wei's indifferent tone silenced all the police officers, some even lowering their heads in shame, unable to meet his gaze.
"Officer, please move aside."
A voice came from behind Li Wei, its tone brimming with superiority, "I am Mr. Mang's lawyer, and I am here to bail out my client..."
Ignoring the annoying voices behind him, Li Wei felt that Gotham was utterly hopeless.
"Officer Li Wei, if there's nothing else, I'll be going now."
He Mang walked up to Li Wei and looked down at him. "I still remember that kick you gave me last time. I'll find a chance to repay you."
After He Mang finished speaking, he smiled at Li Wei, revealing a set of gleaming white teeth.
However, his smugness didn't last long. As a black leather shoe made intimate contact with his groin, He Mang immediately squatted down, clutching his crotch.
Cold sweat poured down He Mang's forehead, and he couldn't utter a single word.
Li Wei looked down at He Mang, bent down and whispered in his ear, "People often have accidents when they are proud. This gentleman may be a little too happy."
Besides, I'm all alone. How you want to play, I'll play along to the very end!
"How could you treat my client like this?!"
Just as Li Wei stood up, he heard that annoying voice continuing to come from behind him.
"What's your badge number? I'm going to file a complaint against you!"
The lawyer realized something was wrong as soon as he uttered his outburst.
The police officers present no longer looked worried upon hearing complaints, unlike before.
On the contrary, after he said those words, they all glared at him fiercely, even the policemen who had taken money from Maroni.
"What...what do you want to do...?"
The lawyer in the gray suit stammered, "I'm a lawyer, you're threatening me..."
Before the lawyer could finish speaking, he met Li Wei's indifferent gaze.
Upon being glanced at by Li Wei, he immediately swallowed the rest of his words, losing all courage to utter them.
"You bastards, you've been blinded by money."
Ignoring the lawyer's terrified look, Li Wei straightened his tie.
"One day, you guys will get your comeuppance, believe me."
Looking at Li Wei's indifferent eyes and his words devoid of any emotion.
The lawyer felt his legs were as if they were filled with lead, and he tried to open his mouth, but no sound came out.
Li Wei patted the lawyer on the shoulder and walked straight out of the police station.
After he walked out of the police station, he heard the lawyer roaring loudly behind him.
But all of this had little to do with him.
