Chapter 6: What is the young lady laughing at?
"What betrothal gifts?" Lin Rusi panicked and clutched the blanket covering her tightly. "I clearly refused the marriage proposal to Li Zeyan in the Empress Dowager's palace, so why are you still sending betrothal gifts?"
“It wasn’t sent by the Third Prince,” Hongxiu said earnestly. “It was sent by Prince Jinglie!”
Lin Rusi's breath hitched. Li Jingyang?
Did he really believe it?
Oh.
Li Zeyan is not a good person, but is Li Jingyang any better?
How can someone with mountains of corpses in her hands find a husband?
Or perhaps Li Jingyang felt she was deliberately mocking him, so he decided to play along and, after she married into the family, use even more brutal methods than Li Zeyan to torment her.
Hongxiu continued, "Miss, you don't know, but after you came back, the people from the Prince's Mansion sent over the betrothal gifts. These things in your room are just small gifts from the Prince. The real betrothal gifts have already been put away in the storeroom by the Madam!"
Lin Rusi pressed, "How did I get back?"
"It was the prince who personally carried the young lady back!"
Upon hearing this, Lin Rusi shuddered and instinctively touched her neck.
Li Jingyang actually carried her back himself?!
It's truly a miracle they weren't strangled on the way...
Hongxiu stared at Lin Rusi cautiously: "Miss, what exactly happened? Why did the marriage with the Third Prince fall through, but instead she got married to Prince Jinglie?"
Lin Rusi glanced at her: "Why are you asking so many questions?"
"It was my fault for being so talkative!" Hongxiu quickly lowered her head.
She fiddled with her fingers, thought for a moment, and then revealed a gleeful expression: "By the way, Miss, you didn't see it, but when the betrothal gifts were delivered, the eldest young lady went to see them too, and was thoroughly scolded by the madam, her face turned green!"
"Eldest sister?" Lin Rusi raised an eyebrow.
The instigator...
"Yes, look at her, she's almost furious!" Hongxiu frowned innocently. Her mistress had been acting strangely since yesterday.
You'll be happy now if we talk about the eldest daughter whom Miss dislikes the most, right?
Lin Rusi got up; she needed to think it over carefully.
Lin Ruqin hated her, she knew that.
This hatred stemmed from the fact that her mother, having become the mistress of the house, mistreated the orphaned daughter of the first wife and whispered in her father's ear every night, causing him to give all the affection that should have belonged to Lin Ruqin to her.
And she...
Taking advantage of her favor and her arrogant personality, she bullied Lin Ruqin relentlessly!
But in the mansion, he was bossed around by servants, never had enough to eat or wear, and could never hold his head up high.
She also stayed at the Third Prince's residence.
She understood how much Lin Ruqin hated him.
So, the feud between her and Lin Ruqin is related to her mother, but even more so to their past lives.
How can we possibly calculate that clearly?
"Go see her." Lin Rusi washed her hands in the basin.
These hands are now as tender and white as scallions, and are very beautiful.
She smiled, as if some of the gloom in her heart had dissipated: "Go and see my elder sister."
Hongxiu came over to serve her. While she was doing her hair, she brought over a brocade box. When she opened it, she found a pair of gold hairpins with filigree and kingfisher feathers inside.
"This was sent by the Prince. It's even more beautiful than the Madam's jewelry. Why don't you wear it, Miss? It'll be a good opportunity for the Eldest Miss to see it!"
Looking at Hongxiu in the bronze mirror, she seemed even more magical than herself.
Lin Rusi couldn't help but think that this treacherous and ungrateful thing was enjoying the unique privilege of being under her, the most favored second young lady, while cursing her true master who was actually the most loyal.
How twisted must that feeling have been?
Hongxiu was about to put the gold hairpin on her when she couldn't help but ask in confusion, "What are you laughing at, Miss?"
