Chapter 350 Pleading
Chapter 350 Pleading
"Brothers, please help me! Those damn bastards not only stole my water, but they also kicked me! I chased them for half a block but couldn't catch them!"
The middle-aged woman was sobbing uncontrollably, her voice hoarse like a broken bellows. "I'm just a simple woman, I really have no other choice! Please, gentlemen, have mercy and help me get the water back! There are elderly people and children at home waiting for water..."
As she was speaking, her forehead slammed directly onto the ground with a thud.
The two young women, who were wiping away tears, were stunned by the old woman's behavior and exchanged glances.
Their water had also been taken away. They had been crying the whole time, but when they saw someone leading the way in begging for help, they quickly followed suit.
The two men knelt on either side of the old woman behind her. Although they did not kowtow, they looked like they were crying and kept muttering, "Please help us" and "Please, big brother," in a soft, pitiful voice.
The three people knelt in the middle of the road, completely blocking the already narrow road.
The two men stopped and turned around, their faces showing embarrassment.
The taller one scratched the back of his head, his lips moved as if he wanted to say something but then swallowed it back; the shorter one sighed and glanced around, seemingly looking for someone who could lend a hand.
Xu Xiaoyan stood behind them and saw this scene. She unconsciously took two steps back. It wasn't that she didn't want to help, but that she didn't dare to. In this world, how could she have the ability to get involved in other people's messes?
Moreover, the middle-aged woman's posture clearly showed that she was treating these two men as her lifeline. Her cries contained not only grievances but also a sense of desperation. If these two men had been even slightly soft-hearted and had been held hostage, it would have been really difficult for them to escape.
She had no desire to get involved in other people's affairs!
Thinking of this, she took a few steps back, hiding herself in the shadow of a dead tree by the roadside, holding her water bottle, and quietly watching the scene unfolding in front of her.
The two girls knelt on the ground, crying so hard that it was almost like pear blossoms in the rain. To say they were "like pear blossoms in the rain" would be an exaggeration. It was hard to tell whether their faces were covered in sweat or tears, mixed with the dust they had just rubbed off on the ground, which was smeared on their cheeks. They looked really pathetic.
But youth is youth. At less than twenty years old, with red eyes, a red nose, and water droplets on her eyelashes, she looked up at her two older brothers. Anyone who saw her would feel a little soft-hearted.
The tall man's steps clearly stopped. He had already turned around to leave, but now he seemed to be held back by something, and he stood frozen in place.
He looked down at the girls kneeling in front of him, pursed his lips, his Adam's apple bobbed, and the hesitation in his eyes grew stronger. His fingers, gripping the water bottle, tightened and loosened repeatedly, clearly indicating that he was struggling with his inner conflict.
"Old Chen," the shorter man lowered his voice, tugged at his companion's sleeve, and said with a hint of urgency and warning, "Don't be foolish. There are only two of us, but who knows how many people are trying to grab the water? What will you do if you rush in? Get beaten up? Or lose the water too?"
He paused, then added in an even lower voice, almost squeezing it out between his teeth, "These days, who doesn't need water? You can take care of one family, but can you take care of a hundred?"
Upon hearing this, the tall man named Old Chen's face twitched. He looked down at the bucket of water at his feet, then at the girls kneeling on the ground. Finally, he let out a heavy sigh and nodded.
"Let's go," the shorter one patted him on the shoulder, his tone carrying a hint of relief.
The two started walking again.
Just then, the girl kneeling on the left suddenly moved.
No one saw how she got up; they only felt a figure suddenly spring up from the ground, and with a reckless force, she rushed straight into Old Chen's arms.
Old Chen staggered from the sudden collision, nearly dropping the water bottle in his arms. He hurriedly caught it with his arm and instinctively tried to block it with his other hand, but the girl grabbed his wrist.
"Big brother!" The girl's voice was high-pitched and thin, with a sob in it, but it also had a sense of desperation.
She was practically clinging to Old Chen's arm, her face buried in his shoulder, her body trembling like a leaf, it was hard to tell whether she was crying or scared.
"I used all my water tickets to buy food and exchange them for water, and then they were all stolen... all stolen..." Her voice came out muffledly from Old Zhou's arms, intermittently.
"I can't go on living... Please save me..." She looked up, her face streaked with tears, but her eyes shone with an unusual brightness.
"I have no family, no one at home, I'm all alone..." Her voice suddenly lowered, almost inaudible, but then rose sharply for the next word, as if gathering all her strength, "Please, take me in!"
The air seemed to freeze for a moment.
"Just give me a bite to eat and a sip of water, and I'll do anything for you." When she said this, she was so calm that it didn't sound like she was begging, but rather like she was stating a fact that she had already thought through.
Her eyes were fixed on Lao Zhou, without shyness or evasion, but with a kind of resolute openness.
Old Zhou froze, his arm half-open, unsure whether to push him away or hold him back.
His face turned bright red, and his lips moved a few times, but he couldn't utter a single word.
He looked down at the girl he didn't know in his arms. His eyes showed surprise, panic, the embarrassment of being roasted on a fire, and something else that was hard to describe, which flashed by so quickly that no one could recognize it.
The shorter man was also stunned, his mouth slightly open, and he almost dropped the tin kettle in his hand.
He clearly hadn't expected things to suddenly take this turn, and for a moment he forgot to continue trying to persuade his companion. He just stared wide-eyed at the scene before him, his expression a complex mix of disdain and unsettling unease.
The girl kneeling behind her, who had originally been with this girl, suddenly trembled and froze in place.
Her mouth was half-open, as if she wanted to say something, but she couldn't say anything. The expression in her eyes changed from confusion to surprise, from surprise to disbelief, and finally settled on a deep, almost bewildered state of bewilderment.
There was only a pure, unadulterated confusion in her eyes, as if she were seeing this person for the first time and wondering how he had suddenly become someone she didn't recognize.
