Chapter 29 A Fateful Connection
Chapter 29 A Fateful Connection
"What's with those expressions on your faces?" Xia Xiaomeng asked incredulously, looking at Shu Yun. "Don't you know he's the one who saved you from the water?"
"Huh?" Shu Yun looked at Gu Jun blankly. She had woken up in the hospital and had no recollection of it. "You saved me?"
Gu Jun pondered for a moment, then said solemnly, "I did save someone who had fallen into the water."
Xia Xiaomeng couldn't help but roll her eyes at the two clueless people. "The person you saved was Shu Yun. I was there at the time and saw it clearly. That's why I thought Gu Jun looked familiar."
Gu Jun recalled that when the troops received an emergency mission, he heard someone shout that someone had fallen into the water while he was on his way to capture a spy. He was nearby and jumped into the water without thinking much to save the person. However, due to the urgency of the situation and the presence of a nurse in the crowd, he left immediately after pulling the person ashore.
The person who fell into the water had half his face covered by his hair, and he didn't have the mind to look at the person's face, so he had no idea that the person he had saved was Shu Yun.
Gu Jun asked, "Are you that nurse?"
Xia Xiaomeng nodded, "Yes, it's me, otherwise how would I know you?"
She couldn't help but sigh again, "You two are truly destined for each other. Fate brought you together. I wish you happiness."
As Shu Yun sat on the back of the bicycle, she silently marveled at the wonder of fate as she left the hospital. The spring breeze gently caressed her face, and her hair fluttered and lightly brushed against Gu Jun's clothes.
After riding for a while, Shu Yun noticed that the atmosphere was a bit quiet, so she couldn't help but poke Gu Jun's waist and abdomen, "What's wrong with you?"
Gu Jun's grip on the bicycle handlebars wobbled slightly, but he quickly regained his balance. After a moment of hesitation, he tentatively asked, "What happened to you back then?"
Shu Yun gripped Gu Jun's clothes tightly, causing Gu Jun's heart to tighten as well. Shu Yun said, "My parents had just passed away not long ago, and a lot of things happened inside and outside the house. I couldn't think straight for a moment and went astray."
The car gradually slowed down, and Shu Yun felt that even Gu Jun's breathing became lighter. Gu Jun's caution made her smile and warmed her heart. She patted Gu Jun's back and said, "Don't worry, I've already thought it through. After my aunt came, I was even less likely to do anything foolish."
Gu Jun hummed in agreement. "Don't be afraid, I'll be here for you."
Shu Yun rested her forehead against Gu Jun's back and responded softly.
After dropping Shu Yun off at home, Gu Jun did not head back towards the military base. Instead, he turned a corner midway, rode his bicycle onto a side road, and then stopped in front of a small building.
"Hey kid, what brings you here today?" Chen Xiong opened the door and was pleasantly surprised to see Gu Jun. He punched Gu Jun in the chest.
As his name suggests, Chen Xiong looked like a bear, tall and strong with dark skin. However, a scar running across his left eye made his facial features look even more fierce. But he was indeed a generous and magnanimous person. He called into the house, "Wife, go buy some more braised food later, we'll add an extra dish to dinner."
Then, turning to Gu Jun, she said, "It's been a long time since we've gotten together. Let's have a good drink today!"
Gu Jun: "I'm afraid it won't work today. The troops have extra training tonight, so we can't drink. I came here today to ask you for help."
Without the slightest hesitation, Chen Xiong patted his chest and said, "Okay, what's up?"
The two had a life-or-death bond on the battlefield. If Gu Jun hadn't braved a hail of bullets to drag him back to the trench, he might have suffered more than just a scar on his eye.
Gu Jun: "Help me look into someone named Wang Jinnan. He's a junior leader in the committee."
Seeing his gloomy expression, Chen Xiong asked curiously, "How did this person offend you?"
Gu Jun took out a cigarette from his pocket and offered one to Chen Xiong, but Chen Xiong refused, saying, "No, my sister-in-law has been keeping a close eye on me lately, so I'm quitting. I'm planning to quit smoking."
Gu Jun lit a cigarette, leaning his tall frame against the wall, and said, half-teasingly, "Looks like you're getting too afraid of your wife now?"
Chen Xiong snorted, "Let's see how you plan to be tough now that you're married."
Gu Jun disagreed, saying that Shu Yun was gentle and quiet.
He got back to the point: "Wang Jinnan has brought people to search my wife's house several times."
Chen Xiong understood. He clicked his tongue inwardly. This guy was probably in trouble. Of all people to mess with, he had to mess with a petty, vengeful, and extremely protective man. If there were no problems, it would be fine, but if there were any loose ends, then his political career was over.
Gu Jun reminded him, "Focus on investigating the homes he searched. What kind of person is he? He's dishonest and definitely has something going on."
Chen Xiong: "Alright, I can handle a minor leader. If I were in charge of this, I guarantee he wouldn't dare go to his sister-in-law's house again."
He's the head of the People's Armed Forces Department, how could he not handle a nobody?
The search results came out quickly, exposing the forces behind Wang Jinnan. Chen Xiong originally thought it would take some effort, but when he heard that someone had gone to the provincial capital to petition and the matter had become a big deal, the province sent a special investigation team down. Chen Xiong only needed to report the collected evidence in a timely manner.
Soon, Wang Jinnan was arrested and taken away. Shu Yun learned about him again in the newspaper, where the front page featured a photo of him kneeling and confessing his crimes. He had many charges and was sentenced to be executed by firing squad.
However, this person also deserved his punishment. Not only was he guilty of embezzlement, bribery, and illegally selling cultural relics and antiques, but he also committed a series of crimes such as forced rape and trafficking of women. His crimes were too numerous to list, and many people in Haicheng felt that he deserved his fate.
Time flies, and after Shen Rujun's cough improved, she was about to board the train back home.
Gu Jun took leave that day and accompanied Shu Yun to the train station to see her off.
Shen Rujun placed Shu Yun's hand in Gu Jun's hand and earnestly instructed, "Gu Jun, please be more tolerant of Yunyun. If she does anything wrong, tell your aunt and treat her well."
Shu Yun's nose tingled with emotion. "Auntie, take good care of yourself. Call me if you need anything. Remember to memorize Gu Jun's military unit's phone number."
"Yes, I remember, I remember, don't worry."
Gu Jun promised, "I will take good care of Xiaoyun, Auntie, don't worry."
The train whistle sounded, and the crowd began to surge towards the doors. Gu Jun, carrying a bag of luggage in each hand, took the lead and walked steadily ahead despite the crowd.
He helped Shen Rujun find a good seat, put away her luggage, and made sure she was settled before getting off the bus.
Shen Rujun's seat was by the window, and Shu Yun stood by the window and spoke to her, "Auntie, when we have time, Gu Jun and I will come to see you."
"Okay, okay, okay, Auntie will wait." Shen Rujun said as she leaned out halfway, took Shu Yun's hand, and stuffed a roll of money she had been holding into Shu Yun's hand. "Take this, use it for yourself."
Shu Yun didn't want to, but the train had already started moving, so she could only wave goodbye to Shen Rujun.
