Chapter 108 Soul in a Dream
Chapter 108 Soul in a Dream
"Brother~ look at me, my sweetheart is longing for you~ come back quickly; smiling brightly~ with deep, expressive eyes, brother~ I'm overjoyed~"
Her voice was clear and melodious, the tune still lingering in my ears: "A promise lightly made, to coax my sweetheart into my arms~ Whispers in her ear, to offer myself in warmth on the bed~"
Every word was ambiguous, and the gentle singing gradually calmed down: "Year after year, the promises made were just lies, the vows of a lifetime cannot compare to a new face turning back... The wedding sedan chair passed by, but the prince could not see the old love weeping, all the joy was not for me..."
"Why...you promised to marry me, but you turned around and married someone else instead. You kept saying you loved me, but in the end you still abandoned me...why...why!"
"I've given you my body and soul, and you betrayed me... Since I can't have your body, I'll have your heart! Let me see if your heart is black! Hahahaha! It's red! You heartless bastard, you're just like a human heart?"
"Since you betrayed me, you should have expected this, right? Why are you kneeling down? What are you crying for? I should be the one crying... Hahahaha! That sounds so good! It's so melodious! Hahahaha!"
The laughter seemed to echo in my mind, so piercing that it felt like my brain was about to explode.
"Don't make any noise!"
Xiang He, who was sleeping restlessly, suddenly sat up. Before she was fully awake, she saw a white light in front of her. Enraged, she grabbed the copper coin sword from beside her pillow and threw it at her.
The copper coin sword was deeply embedded in the door, and the ball of white light trembled beside it, looking as if it were trembling with fear.
Suddenly, the world spun around her, and Xiang He fell backward. A large hand caught her just in time. "Were you dreaming?"
He spoke so softly that he was afraid of disturbing her. Xiang He took a deep breath, and the dizziness gradually subsided, and her blurry vision became much clearer.
With difficulty, she opened her eyes to see what was beside her. Jinghua Shuiyue looked at her anxiously. He Sui'an quickly propped up the pillow, carefully laid her down, and pulled the blanket over her.
He sat on the edge of the bed and reached out his hand. Shuiyue immediately handed him a warm towel. "Can I wipe my face now?"
He had been thinking of wiping it off since he got back last night, but it was a talisman, and he dared not touch it. He didn't know if He Sui'an could touch it carelessly, so he left it until she woke up.
Xiang He tilted her head and nodded, "Go ahead and wipe it."
She was weak and listless at the moment. She had exhausted too much energy last night and didn't have the strength for a while, so she could only let him touch her face.
I had been prepared for a long ordeal, but his movements were so gentle they were almost imperceptible.
Xiang He lifted her eyelids to look and saw him staring at the bloodstains on her face, his eyes gleaming with a gentle light that, though not dazzling, was still eye-catching.
She stared blankly, and just as she was lost in thought, He Suian met her eyes. He paused slightly before continuing his work, his eyes smiling. "You scared them so much last night."
Hearing this, Xiang He paused, her eyes flickering slightly. "They've all been behaving themselves, haven't they?"
“No one would dare to be disobedient,” he said, rubbing the towel in water and wringing it out. “No one would dare to bother you.”
She fell into a deep sleep last night. Jinghua Shuiyue carefully bandaged her wounds, but she didn't wake up even when he touched them. He was worried sick all night.
The wounds inflicted by the yin energy bled profusely, and it took the twins a great deal of effort to stop them.
Knowing they were worried, Xiang He turned to them and smiled gently, "You all worked hard last night. Go back and rest now. Be careful not to give yourself away if someone comes looking for you."
"Master, please get some rest."
"it is good."
Just as Jinghua Shuiyue returned to her master's mirror, there was a knock on the door.
He Sui'an handed her a handkerchief, and Xiang He rubbed her forehead vigorously, then rubbed her hands to remove all the blood.
She looked down and realized she had changed her clothes; it must have been Mirror Flower Water Moon who changed them for her.
When he looked up again, he could vaguely see a student-looking man outside the door. He stood on tiptoe to try to see inside, but He Suian blocked his view.
After the two talked for a while, He Suian closed the door and came in, carrying a jade plate. "Eat something warm first, we have to go down to see the magistrate in a bit."
"A county magistrate? A new county magistrate has taken office so soon?"
"The prefect took the two away and immediately arranged for someone in the prefectural government to temporarily replace them. Once the imperial court arranges for personnel to draft the documents, a new county magistrate will take office."
"Oh."
Xiang He reached out and took the large bowl, which contained steaming hot porridge. The aroma made her feel hungry, so she ate while blowing on it, and soon finished the bowl of hot porridge.
He handed over the bowl, lifted the covers, and got up. "Let's go, don't keep everyone waiting."
The moment her feet touched the ground, she felt pain. Xiang He immediately sat up and waited for He Suian to help her. Her injuries needed to be treated properly; simple bandaging wouldn't suffice.
He Suian helped her up by the arm, and with his other hand on her back, they slowly walked towards the door.
A copper coin sword was still stuck in the door. Xiang He casually pulled it out and said, "You stay here and behave yourself."
As if it understood, the white light flickered a few times and then floated to the roof beam.
The two left their room and walked to the front of the inn. They heard voices talking downstairs. Xiang He looked up and saw Qi Xin standing on the second floor, hurrying towards her.
"Miss, are you alright? What happened last night? How did a woman end up on the mountain? And what about those bones...?"
“Young Master Qi,” He Suian interrupted his question, “I will talk about these things in a moment. Please make way for me.”
Qi Xin was anxious; he desperately wanted to know what had happened last night. Seeing that He's expression wasn't good, he quickly apologized, "I'm so sorry, I was just so anxious..."
"It's alright. I need to go down and see the lord first. Young Master Qi, why don't you stay and listen in as well?"
"it is good……"
The three went downstairs, where a number of people were sitting in the first-floor reception hall. Among them was a middle-aged man dressed in official robes, who could be recognized at a glance as the county magistrate. Next to him sat the village head, while the shopkeeper stood respectfully to the side.
As soon as the three men saw the two coming downstairs, the innkeeper immediately waved to them, "Come and pay your respects to the master!"
He Suian helped Xiang He approach, and the acting magistrate, seeing that she had difficulty walking, waved his hands repeatedly, "Don't kneel, what exactly happened on the mountain? How come there are so many corpses? What were you doing up the mountain? Are the corpses on the mountain your doing?"
Despite the barrage of questions, Xiang He remained calm.
He Sui'an said with a straight face, "Last night we went up the mountain to look for the missing student. The mountain was covered with thick fog. Suddenly a woman appeared and attacked the girl. The student and his attendant were worried that something might happen, so they knocked the woman unconscious. The girl was exhausted from traveling for days and was also injured, so she fainted."
"We couldn't find the way down the mountain at first, but then the fog suddenly cleared and we saw a pile of white bones. We were frightened and brought the people down first. When we reached the middle of the mountain, we met the innkeeper and his men."
The narrative is simple and logical.
However, the magistrate frowned and said, "You were the only ones on the mountain at the time, and I have doubts about your story."
Xiang He moved his arms to steady himself. "Why don't you bring that woman here, sir? Ask her what she did on the mountain and why she was all alone."
