Chapter 53 It actually worked!
When Lin's father led everyone to the foot of the mountain, Li Deshan was talking to Lin Yan about how to plan things out.
"The foundation needs to be built higher. This place is too close to the river. If there is heavy rain and the water level rises, it will be easy to be flooded."
"It should be further away from the mountain, otherwise the light will be poor and the humidity will be too high. Your east side is blocking the light. After you build the house, you should also pay attention to moisture prevention on a regular basis."
"The place is quite large, and the scenery is nice too." Li Deshan wandered around for a while and made a plan in mind.
"Bring me an iron stake. I'll take some men to measure the foundation first," Li Deshan instructed, seeing that Lin's father had brought more than a dozen people, knowing they were workers.
The two men stretched the rope taut, and Li Deshan simply walked around, marking the ground with lines. The workers gathered around, utterly astonished.
After determining the area, Li Deshan arranged for everyone to dig the foundation according to the location he had drawn.
Li Deshan looked at the dozen or so people working there and felt somewhat dissatisfied.
He looked at Lin's father and said, "These people are not enough. You have only bought bricks and tiles. We still need to prepare timber, pillars, brackets, and beams in advance. If we really get to work, we will need a lot of manpower."
“I have quite a lot of timber here, let me show you,” Mr. Lin quickly introduced.
"Hmm? It's already prepared?" Li Deshan was also somewhat surprised.
"No, building a house is quite sudden. But I'm a carpenter, and I usually prepare wood, but the quantity is definitely not enough."
After all, Lin Yan sometimes acts on a whim. The house-building project didn't give them any time to react before it started. Thinking about it now, it still feels like a dream.
"You're a carpenter too!" Li Deshan said, somewhat surprised.
When he followed Lin's father to the workshop, he saw the neatly stacked timber and nodded. Then he was surprised to see the rocking chair, folding table and chairs that had been made.
"You did this?!"
"Yes. My skills are so-so. It's all thanks to Yan'er's many ideas that I was able to make money by designing this style."
Perhaps it was the admiration that colleagues had for their boss, but Lin's father always showed great respect when facing Li Deshan, though he was exceptionally proud when talking about Lin Yan.
"This rocking chair was Lin Yan's idea?!" Li Deshan raised an eyebrow, quite shocked.
He had a rocking chair at home, and when he first saw it on the market, he was amazed by the craftsman's ingenuity. Who would have thought it was Lin Yan's idea?
"Correct!"
"Hmph, that girl certainly has a lot of ideas. I wonder how her flower arrangement is going?" Li Deshan nodded and snorted. He remembered that Lin Yan, that mischievous girl, had made a bet with him and gotten free labor.
"We have some stock, but it's definitely not enough to build houses. Let's send some more people to the mountains to cut some more."
"There are still pillars that don't have time to dry, let's just go buy them." Li Deshan's attitude softened considerably when he saw Lin Hai's workshop.
Timber used for building houses usually needs to be ventilated and dried for several months in advance, but once the foundation is laid, the pillars need to be erected, and there is no time to prepare.
"Okay," Lin's father quickly agreed.
With preparations made, there was no need to worry about the construction period. Lin's father took Zhang Peng to buy pillars, while Li Deshan watched everyone lay the foundation.
Seeing Lin Yan lounging in the rocking chair, seemingly quite relaxed, I suddenly felt a surge of anger.
"Hmph, you're so free! You've got me, this old man, here to do your work!"
Lin Yan opened her closed eyes, looked at the angry old man with his hands behind his back, and laughed, "Hey, old man, don't go back on your word! You've already agreed."
"Hmph, going back on your word! Where's my Ghost Orchid? Did you kill it already?" Li Deshan questioned.
“How could that be? It’s right there. Go and see!” Lin Yan pointed to the frame outside the thatched hut.
Li Deshan walked over and saw that his wilted orchid had become fresh and vibrant.
There was a piece of rotten wood in the pot, covered with moss. The roots of the ghost orchid were wrapped around the wood, and two of them had even bloomed.
The flowers are small and pale white, scattered among the green moss, like ghosts in a dense forest.
Li Deshan was immediately captivated by the sight of the flower. His small eyes widened and gleamed as he examined the potted plant from all angles.
"How about it, not bad, right!" Lin Yan said with a sly smile. This was rotten wood that she had specially gone to the mountains to find, and she had also used her supernatural power to heal it before Gui Lan was satisfied.
"It actually healed!! No, wait!"
"You changed the pot, didn't you?" Li Deshan exclaimed in disbelief, thinking that Lin Yan must have found someone else to raise it, or perhaps this was the one she raised herself. Otherwise, how could it have changed so much overnight?
'That's right, it must be because she also grows ghost orchids, that's why she knows so much about them. Don't try to fool me!' Li Deshan became more and more certain of his thoughts.
But then he thought about it again, suddenly turned to Lin Yan with a smile, and hugged the flowerpot tightly.
"I don't care where you got it, this flowerpot is mine now!"
"Hahaha, it's for you, right? Nobody's going to take it from you!" Lin Yan found his childlike behavior amusing, turned her head, lay back in the rocking chair, and yawned.
Li Deshan held a pot of flowers and looked at it like a lovesick fool.
"This feels so good!" Lin Yan exclaimed.
At the foot of this mountain, the air is cool and fresh, and the plants are lush. Just lying here, I can feel my supernatural abilities activating.
"Uncle Lin Hai!"
"Uncle Lin Hai!"
A shout reached Lin Yan's ears.
Lin Yan looked up and saw a man standing not far away, but she didn't recognize who he was.
Lin Yan stood up to greet him, only to find it was Zhang Qingfeng, who lived next door to Old Lin's family. She asked, somewhat puzzled, "Brother Zhang?"
"Hey, it's Lin Yan! Where's your father?"
“My dad just went out to buy timber.”
"Oh. Your sister-in-law ran into Uncle Lin Hai this morning. He said your family is building a house and asked me to come and help out!"
Zhang Qingfeng didn't mention wages. He hadn't planned to ask for any wages anyway; it was just a favor between neighbors.
"That's wonderful! Brother Zhang, we're short-handed right now. Thank you so much!" Lin Yan said excitedly, expressing her gratitude.
“Oh, don’t be so polite! In our village, we help each other build houses. When I got married, Uncle Lin Hai helped me build an extension for my new house!” Zhang Qingfeng said.
When they built their new house, Lin Hai helped a lot, and his mother even helped with the cooking. On the other hand, the second branch of the Lin family did nothing and even freeloaded meals. The Zhang family didn't get angry because of the eldest branch.
This is also why the Zhang family is closer to the eldest son's family; after the eldest son's family split up, the Zhang family and the Lin family only had a superficial relationship.
"Are you starting to dig the foundation?" Zhang Qingfeng asked, looking at the workers who were digging the pit.
"Yes, we just started work today, it's only just begun!"
“This job is easy, I’ll go help.” With that, Zhang Qingfeng picked up a hoe from the ground and went over.
Lin Yan thought, "We can also hire some people in the village. Anyone can do work like digging, so we don't necessarily need craftsmen."
But we can deal with hiring tomorrow. I need to prepare lunch for these workers myself.
