Possessed No More: The True Star Returns to Claim Her Throne

Chapter 192: Maternal Grandmother

Chapter 192: Maternal Grandmother

’Who wants to get in line for her? And who wants to keep her company anyway? She wishes Riley Perry would just drop dead!’

An idea popped into her head, and she forced a fake smile. "By the way, we’ve been talking for a while, and I still don’t know my cousin’s name." ’It would be great if they brought back an imposter.’

"Oh, Riley Perry. You can just search for her online. She’s a celebrity."

Whitney Valentine’s hopes were dashed, and her mood soured even further. She exchanged a few more insincere pleasantries before taking her leave a short while later.

After she left, Dawn York looked at Warren Valentine. "I told you, she’s definitely hiding something. So what if she was only five or six? Some people are born evil.

Mom, think about it. With our sister’s looks, if she hadn’t been lost, would the title of Dragonspire’s number one socialite ever have gone to Whitney?

Besides, I remember very clearly that she was never this beautiful as a child. At the very least, her eyes weren’t this big. She didn’t have double eyelids, either. She took after Second Aunt; she had hidden-crease eyelids, where you could only see a faint double eyelid when she looked down. When she looked straight ahead, she had monolids. But look at her figure and face now. She hasn’t had any plastic surgery, yet she’s completely transformed.

There’s something strange about her."

’Without me, this family would have fallen apart sooner or later.’

’The problem is, my position is a bit awkward. If I say too much, I’m afraid the family will get the wrong idea. Blood is thicker than water, after all. They are all related by blood, while I’m just an adopted daughter.’

Fortunately, her mission in this world was more or less complete. In the original timeline, after the host’s father sacrificed his life, she was adopted by the Valentine Family. A few months later, Cheryl Valentine was born. A little over a year after that, Cheryl Valentine disappeared. Two years later, Ronald Valentine was injured in the military and subsequently retired to a non-command position.

Then, Iris Weldon was hit by a car while crossing the street, and both her legs had to be amputated.

Warren Valentine got into a fight with a classmate and was blinded in one eye.

At that point, everyone in Ronald Valentine’s immediate family had met with disaster. Not a single one was left unscathed.

Rumors began to spread that the original host was a natural-born jinx and that anyone close to her would suffer.

As a result, she was ostracized at school and had no friends. Over time, she grew more timid and cowardly, even though the Valentines treated her as well as ever—in fact, they became even kinder to her.

But the kinder they were, the more the original host felt she was letting them down. Shortly after her twentieth birthday, she married Cameron Sullivan from the Sullivan family, who also lived in the military compound. She thought that by doing so, she would no longer be a jinx to the Valentines who had treated her so genuinely. She even hoped the Sullivan Family could help the Valentines, allowing her to repay her adoptive parents.

Who would have thought that Cameron Sullivan had pursued her with ulterior motives? Although Ronald Valentine had retired to a non-command role, his network of contacts was still intact. The Sullivan Family was not on the same level as the Valentine Family, and getting connected with them was all for the sake of their son’s future.

But when Cameron Sullivan brought this up with the original host, she refused. She would rather die than go home and ask her adoptive father for favors. Afterward, Cameron Sullivan started giving her the silent treatment. He wouldn’t speak to her and acted as if she didn’t exist. Eventually, he stopped coming home altogether. And then, she died.

She was pushed into the road by her own biological mother—the one who’d divorced her father—and collided with an oncoming car. She was sent flipping three times through the air before hitting the ground and being smashed into a pile of bloody paste.

’The original host couldn’t accept it. She didn’t know what she had done wrong. She didn’t hate her biological mother for abandoning her, she didn’t resent being isolated, and she didn’t even blame herself for being blind enough to fall for Cameron Sullivan. But she began to doubt her own existence. Could it be true? Am I really a jinx, just like everyone says, doomed to bring misfortune to those who are good to me?’

’If it weren’t for me, would my adoptive parents’ family have suffered so many tragedies?’

And then, Dawn York arrived. By the time she came, Cheryl Valentine was already missing. She only had time to secretly use an Amulet from her newbie gift pack on Ronald Valentine, help Iris Weldon avoid the car accident, and then help Warren Valentine evade his disaster. Her final task was to find the Valentine Family’s lost little princess.

As for the Sullivan Family, not long after Ronald Valentine escaped his fate, Mr. Sullivan was transferred from the military back to his hometown, where he became a deputy director in the county bureau. At that time, he no longer had the qualifications to live in the military compound.

’I had dropped hints more than once in the past. Fortunately, while the family didn’t suspect Whitney Valentine was a problem, they also hadn’t grown too close to her. Today would probably be my final reminder.’

’What I said during the day about letting Riley Perry take over the company wasn’t a lie. I can’t take anything from this world with me anyway. Ahem, to be honest, if my grandmother hadn’t pulled some strings, it wouldn’t have been my turn to become a Quick Transmigrator!’

’Thank you, Grandma!’

That’s right, Dawn York was a Quick Transmigrator with a system, designated 408. Her mother was none other than Serena Yates, the Grand Princess of Radiance of the Grand Kingdom of Veridia. Her maternal uncle was Caspian Yates, the founding emperor of Veridia. And her maternal grandmother was Luna Wyatt, the Empress Dowager of Veridia, also known as Luna, the master of three thousand worlds!

Fortunately, her grandmother had taken pity on her and released two soul trackers when she was departing the world. Among all of her grandmother’s descendants, Dawn York’s soul was the most powerful. After living in the Grand Kingdom of Veridia for over fifty years and facing death, her soul was bound by 408, and she became a Quick Transmigrator.

’Ahem, this world was actually her first mission. The Amulets she had used before all came from the newbie gift pack.’

’Life is easier for those with connections, no matter where you go. That rule applies in the world of quick transmigration too!’

’They say even my grandmother didn’t get a gift pack when she first started doing missions.’

’But 408 was acting a little weird today. My normally chatty system hasn’t said a single word since seeing Riley Perry. What a coward.’

Iris Weldon patted her daughter’s hand. "I understand what you’re trying to say, dear. But your Second Uncle only has one daughter, Whitney. His relationship with your father is what it is. Some things are pointless to say out loud."

’She wasn’t stupid. After her daughter’s repeated hints, how could she not understand?’

’But there was no proof!’

’And even if there were proof, Whitney was only five or six years old back then. Who would believe a child that age could have such vicious thoughts?’

’Even if they believed it, the matter would have to be dropped. After all, she was a minor!’

’All she could do now was feel thankful that her daughter was back.’

’Over the years, Whitney Valentine had often tried to curry favor with her. I understood why. Whitney felt that since Dawn wasn’t my biological child, she, the niece, was the ’real’ family. Any good things should rightly go to her, not be wasted on an outsider like Dawn!’

’The fact that I haven’t killed that girl is the height of my self-restraint. And now she wants to take advantage of me? In her dreams!’

As the mother and daughter were talking, Iris Weldon glanced up and saw her son fiddling with a jade pendant around his neck. "Where did you get that pendant?"

The man, usually so composed and often teased by his own mother for being as stiff as a board, now showed a flicker of pride. "My sister gave it to me."

He hadn’t had a chance to look at it properly at his sister’s house. Only now did he realize this pendant wasn’t made of any common type of jade. It seemed to be a material he had never seen before, but it was definitely more precious. Something seemed to be flowing inside it. When worn against his skin, it gave his body a warm, pleasant sensation, yet it wasn’t Warm Jade.

The pendant was square, engraved with intricate, rune-like patterns. They resembled the exorcism talismans people would paste on their doors when he was a child—at least, the patterns were similar. Of course, he couldn’t be sure if what was on the pendant was actually a talisman.
