ABOUT THE GROUP and LEADERS - Who We Are and Why

NYCDAUG, the New York City Digital Assistant Users' Group, is one of the premier PDA centric user groups. Founded in 1994 under the auspices of NYCNUG, an Apple Newton user group, our mission is to embrace ALL new PDA devices whether based on the Palm OS, Windows Mobile/PocketPC, Blackberry, Linux, Psion, Java, Symbian, Apple iPhone or something new and completely different. NYCDAUG is a not-for-profit volunteer run organization serving the community at large, with an international presence via our online services and product reviews.

There are over 1,250 members via the email Lists and web site with about 660 being Palm OS/TreoP users and 500 being Windows Mobile/Pocket PC/TreoW users. The balance is in our Psion and Sharp SIGS. This makes us one of the largest PDA groups in the country with members from around the globe.

At the monthly meetings (with alternate months covering Palm OS and Windows Mobile/Pocket PC) there are 20-40 members in attendance. NYCDAUG meets at B&H Photo/Video's Meeting Center in New York City.

As a organization, we are PDA-centric yet platform independent. We firmly believe that the best decision as to what PDA to use (noting the "P" in PDA stands for "PERSONAL") is the one made from an awareness of what is available and NYCDAUG uniquely offers that option. You can see at our different platform meetings all sorts of PDAs and then decide what might be right for you. Once one makes that decision, then one can focus in by subscribing to one of the email groups or all as that decision and option is always yours. At that point, each platform coverage is unique and independent as it would be in a smaller single platform group.

In the Fall of 1999, NYCDAUG incorporated NYPalm, the New York City Palm Pilot Users' Group and in February of 2002, incorporated NYCPPC, the New York City Pocket PC Users Group. This strengthened coverage and support of both Palm OS and Pocket PC OS devices. Support was added for Sharp-Linux and Psion devices as well. The year 2004 marked our 10th anniversary!

NYCDAUG's affiliations: We are an Apple User Group, a member of Microsoft Mindshare User Group Program and an affiliate of InterPUG, the International Palm Users Group. We are members of the Palm WebRing, the Pocket PC WebRing and The Newton WeRing. We are one of the few user groups who are an AvantGo Partner.

NYCDAUG holds many special events, such as PC Expo breakfasts with Palm in 1999 and with HandSpring in 2000 and 2001. In June 2002 and again in 2003 they sponsored special meetings with PalmSource President and CEO Navid Nagel as guest speaker and repeated this kind of event with PalmSource's Dory Yochum in August, 2002 and PalmSource's Chief Competitive Officer Michael Mace and Lee Williams, PalmSource's VP Engineering Product Development in November 2002. In October 2003, we hosted the New York stop on the PalmOne's Pugapalooza Tour and in May 2005 PalmOne's Pugapalooza came back to show us the LifeDrive and other new PDAs. Microsoft has co-sponsored events as well along with special invites to their Mobility Tours.

NYCDAUG has built long-standing relationships with many major vendors including Palm Inc. , PalmSource Inc., HandSpring, Microsoft, AvantGo, Apple Computer, LandWare and O'Reilly and offers its members discounts and special offers as it can arrange them.

New for 2008, Supporting Level DUES have been SUSPENDED! In the past, they were $10 and that gave you access to member ONLY discounts, meeting RAFFLES, being welcome at all of our VIP meetings, free ads and a warm and fuzzy feeling! You generally do not need to be a member to come to one of our meetings but Supporting Level members always get first dibs on reserved or limited seating for special meetings like we have had with PalmSource's VIPs or HandSpring and Microsoft and inclusion in meeting raffles.

More member only benefits are always being developed.

In Fall of 2002, we had a Member Drive for a brand new HP Pocket PC and this was a Supporting Level only benefit.

Peter is a member of the PalmSource Influencers list.
